I was under the impression it would be a trip in the summer, if not Shetland/Scilly in October would be absolutely fantastic! One little suggestion p'haps, would Foula or North Ronaldsay be cheaper than Fair Isle? Still a good chance of sibes, and its much quieter so we could find loads of good birds ourselves! I may be busy in October, but if I'm free and it's £250 for Shetland or Scilly I'm there! Still never met any of you on here so it would be a great chance to go and meet people, and first time I visit either of those places! One other thought, if we were to hire a minibus, are any of you old enough/qualified to drive or know someone who could ferry us all around?

Hi i am going to scillies the last week of October 23rd to 30th hoping to travel down on the friday 22nd and twitch stuff on way down and also pick up anything on the saturday on the way back , might mean roughing it in car over night and have space for three or four people in my car , or if there is enough people interested would be happy to drive mini bus ( this could be quite expensive though ? ) or maybe someone drives a second car ?? , i am qualified driver and have drivern hgv 's for 20 odd years , i have already booked my flight and accomadation , and i of course realise you wont want an old git hanging around so would be happy to just take you and then leave you to do your own thing whislt there and of course bring you back , i know there is a campsite on Scillies and have added link to this post . So its up to you just let me know, no probs if you would rather not :t:

Personally I would say Norfolk would be best. You could camp on a campsite at Wells and would already be in walking distance of Holkham pines/dunes (some great birds have turned up here) and would be close to the Wells bus station where you could catch the coast hopper bus what could take you places all around the coast such as Titchwell, Holme or Cley. I use in frequently and find it v.good. Norfolk is also not to hard to get to by public transport.
Hi another good thing about Norfolk if there's not many migrants around there's still plenty of other birds to see such as Bearded Tits they are much easier to see in the autumn also all the geese and ducks are arriving There's always a good chance of seeing Shorelarks Snow Buntings,Lapland Buntings,Hen Harriers. And one place i would certainly go to if you all decide on Norfolk is Stubbs Mill near Strumpshaw Fen for seeing the Cranes and Marsh Harriers coming into roost also you will see Barn Owls and Merlins there.Scilly,Mainland Shetland and Fair Isle if the weather conditions are not right for birds it can be very quiet and boring.I once spent a week on Fair Isle i think it was my second visit and i saw very few birds because the wind was wrong but you have to take your chance when you go to places like Scilly and Shetland.

Well done on the Temminck's Stint Liam, and a great picture of it too. ;)

Unfortunately a slight change in plan with dates for the Norfolk trip but not too much of a problem if I'm honest. Due to complications I'm going to be going to Norfolk between in the first week of June. However, it is more or less confirmed that next weekend I will be going to Speyside in replacement of going to Norfolk earlier, so in the end I will be going on both trips. Plus, I won't be missing out on the specialities that I'll be looking for whilst in Norfolk even if I go out of the later date, and early June isn't too bad anyway. :t:

Just come out of hospital after a severe concussion. Somebody (don't know who?) threw a rock at my head which caused me to fall into a river and hit my head more times! I am still in a big shock and there is a Hoopoe in my village at the moment but i am not well enough to go.
Hopefully I will be better for Norfolk in 2 weeks!

Christ CCC (crazily concussed child?). What a mad/bizzarre injury! as a town boy, this just seems the weirdest 'accident' ever! Why did someone throw a rock at your head I wonder? Of course, this may be slightly more normal in the countryside, but as I hardly ever stay in rural britain I wouldn't know.

edit: sorry, just remembered I've been throwing rocks at strangers in rural Wales for the past few weeks ;)

178 - Can't really call today a quiet day even though it was quite soporific and there wasn't a huge amount of bird activity! First new bird for the year of the day was two Ospreys fishing over the Ythan Estuary, and secondly cracking views of at least 4 Little Terns at the ternery here. Besides from this I decided to have a look for the Dotterels seen at Strathbeg again and got some relatively ok views of 16 of them, double the amount that I saw on my last visit, which was enjoyable. Managed to miss the King Eider also at the Ythan despite scrupulous checks of each and every Eider in the whole area, but this didn't matter too much as I have already seen this bird. I also missed a couple of Whinchats, which would have been a year tick but no worries here either.

Tommorrow, if I can convince my Dad, I might just hop over the border into Angus to have a look for a Red-necked Phalarope that has been seen in Kirriemuir, but only on the basis that it is still there. Would be a lovely bird to see.

Cheers,

Joseph
