Young Birders Yearlist Challenge (1 Viewer)

Jonny721

Well-known member
Definately doing another yearlist competition next year, thinking as Birding Maniac suggested to do it on the young birders thread so people don't have to post twice when they've seen something. Also I was thinking of a monthly update by everyone instead of posting whenever you have seen 1 yeartick, but what does everyone else think? Any ideas or opinions are greatly appreciated :)

Thanks Jonny

Time spent wishing is time wasted!
you finally got the Arctic then Andrew!? Nice one. I'm not gripped off at all :p

I'm afraid I am unlikely to improve on 223 for this year. After my terrible double dip in November, I completely stopped twitching almost. A very happy new year to everyone though and hope next year is as good if not better!
I regretably will not be year listing next year, but I will be focussing on lifers and 'Tubenoses'
For those who are not aware. Chris Bridge and I will be partaking in a personal challenge to see all species of 'Tubenoses' (i.e. Albatrosses, Petrels, Shearwaters and Storm-petrels) in the world before we die. We are starting next year with a Scilly Pelagic and then will venture further afield starting with Maderia and ending in Figi towards the end of the challenge.
We would certainly like to make everyone aware of the challenge as we could use support and potentially financial help for some of the more long distance 'twitches'
'Like' our challenge on Facebook and we will be grately thankful! - http://www.facebook.com/?ref=home#!/pages/The-Tubenose-Challenge/170312186337024

I've finally finished the combined yearlist for all of us and it comes to 602 species for the year o:D If there are any species I have missed off my list then email me and I'll add them to the final list for the end of the year. I know one of our contibutors is in Africa at the moment so the list will grow before we finish ;)

266 - (Coues') Arctic Redpoll - Rainton Meadows DWT

Just the one but a striking individual with a nice pale white unstreaked rump.

Nice, well done mate! probably be back up there to check sometime soon, though probably in the new year as I'm out ringing until the end of the year. LUCKY YOU!

you finally got the Arctic then Andrew!?

Yes well done to Canadagurl she is the winner for this competiton.

As for the UK, 2 people from Durham are the winners. What can WE day?;)

Joseph N

Lothian Young Birder
Hello all,

At somewhere with Wi-Fi, hence why I've managed to make it online! As Jonny said, I saw a Green-winged Teal on the 28th - the long-staying drake at Kinneil Lagoon - which took me up to 239. Today I did a bit of birding in the Somerset area (where I'm staying) and successfully saw, admittedly after hearing of the whereabouts of this hardly scarce species, a Green Sandpiper on Ashford Reservoirs, a bird that had eluded me for so long. It's really odd that I was able to catch up with this species, considering the time of year! There seems to be small numbers dotted throughout the county at present, probably due to the hard weather. Anyway, that means that I finish the year on 240 .

Well done to the Durham young birders on their victory and to Jonny for creating and managing such a fantastic thread :). I feel I represented the Scottish side of things pretty well, and I am chuffed that I managed third in Britain :t: . I might not enter next years yearlist, as I am planning on just doing a yearlist for just Scotland, which I presume means I wouldn't be able to participate?

Happy New Year everyone,

Joseph
