Super photo's, kathy! Love Mr & Mrs P! Great to hear the birds enjoyed their food treats!:t:

Hi Pam

Thank you Pam for your kind comments about my photo's. Trying to get the hamg of the cmaera more so than ever. :t:

The Swan food is going down very well at the moment (it is quite expensive too, but worth it for our feathered friends).

It is although they are telling us that they are suffering the cold, as we do ourselves. :eek!:;)

Just a couple from Sutton Bingham this morning...I happened to be passing! Nothing unusual, a lot of the usual.

Lovely waterbird photo's Kathy & Wendy.

The left hand Canada in your first photo, looks strange Wendy? It doesn't look as if the black neck extends as far down as the other Canada's & the white neck marking looks wider? It could just be the way it's standing, but it does look odd.

You're right, Val. I hadn't noticed that. Not sure whether the markings on Canada's are all different or not....must do a little research into that....

Having a better look, I think it's either trying to intimidate the other one, or it's subserviant to it. It's all ruffled up too.|:d|

I have posted the short report below on the 'Local patch' thread on the main board and thought it might be of interest on this thread.
Brandon Marsh is a Warwickshire Wildlife Trust reserve. I visited a few weeks ago for the first time and was most impressed! It is set in 200 acres and has Lakes, Woodland and extensive Reed beds! The photo's added were taken on my first visit.
http://www.warwickshire-wildlife-trust.org.uk/Brandon/brandon.htm

A busy weekend with a visit to Brandon Marsh on Saturday and Upton Warren (Moors Pools and Flashes) on Sunday! It was good to return to Brandon Marsh for my second visit. No Bittern seen this time but nevertheless an enjoyable walk on a pleasant but dull day and of course some very nice birds seen. Goldeneye, Gadwall, Kingfisher, Treecreeper and Nuthatch (at the feeding station)being a few of the highlights of the day!

The day at Upton Warren was to see a change in the weather!!! Such a cold, biting wind but fortunately missing the heavy showers of rain and hail throughout the day! After carefully negotiating the extremely slippy, muddy path to the Flashes (wellies are a must at present) 3 Avocets, 1 Redshank, Curlew, Common Snipe and 2 sightings of a Green Woodpecker were some of the highlights!
Surprisingly 40 species were seen at each reserve! This intrigued me to check which species were seen at both sites and which were not!

I have added a list of species that differed at each reserve.
Brandon Marsh: Goldeneye, L B B Gull, Gadwall, L Grebe, Kingfisher, Pheasant, Treecreeper, Wren, Nuthatch, Siskin & Linnet.

Upton Warren: ( Mooors Pools & Flashes): Avocet, Oystercatcher, Redshank, Curlew, Herring Gull, Sparrowhawk, Carrion Crow, Mistlethrush, Fieldfare, Bullfinch & Pied Wagtail.

The remaining 29 bird species were the usual Water and Woodland suspects to be found at similiar reserves!
In total 51 species for the weekend of which I am pleased with, though no new additions to my year list.

Fabulous report Pam

I really enjoyed reading all about your trip and you have pictures to show how beautiful the weather was on your trip out. Lovely blue skies, and the row of Popular Trees made the place a good landmark for all visits.

Lovely to see Linnets as you have done. Was it one or a few at one time.
We have seen a flock of Linnets in Central Scotland, and they stayed about the area we where walking in for a while.
They like to hang around in a little group, and liked to sit on the utilty wires chirping to one another.
Linnets what sweet little birds. Lovely Rose coloured chests too. :gh:

Well done seeing the Green Woodpecker (Mr Yaffle) Really attractive birds and they are quite large too compared with the GSW. Quite surprising considering their diet is so different to a GSW.

Lucky you having a good list of birds Pam as you have done so. Well done ans keep that list going for 2009. :gh:

Thanks for your kind comments Kathy and Val!

Just the one Linnet we picked out amongst a small flock of Siskins, Kathy! The light was not too brilliant at the time and they feed so high in the trees! Makes your neck out trying to see them with your bins!o:D

It was a good weekend, Val, it would have been good to have added to my year list though! Still plenty of time left!:t:

A very enjoyable report Pam and a lovely pics too. It looks like one of those beautiful sunny days with a sting in it's tail - very chilly.

Brandon marsh looks like a well managed reserve Pam, I love the glorious blue and reflections in the pics. A good list of some super Birds, Ive not seen a Mistle Thrush for a while, I hope to visit Cosmeston to look for early migrants this weekend which is a good place for M'T.
A really nice report of the area Pam.

Thanks,Pie! It is a well managed reserve, I am looking forward to seeing the Dragon and Butterflies in the near future there! Plenty of small ponds and vegetation so it should be good!

Good luck with your Mistle Thrush and enjoy Cosmeston at the weekend!:t:

This isn't my usual local patch, but it didn't seem to warrant a new thread.

OH and I went down to the coast this afternoon, he dropped me off at Cogden Beach, drove along to West Bexington and we walked to meet in the middle! He had the dog with him and says that impeded his progress, he made it about a quarter of the way along, I think he had a quick snooze first! Anyway, to business.....

The track is part of the SW coastal path and, as such, is well walked. Today there were long muddy stretches in spite of the recent dry weather. The Skylarks were out in force all along the route and the Coots were very vocal and splashing about in the reed beds. There were sounds from the reeds that I couldn't id (I'll try later) and then, at Burton Mere, there were dozens of Mallard, more Coots, a couple of Swans and GBBs in force too. Stonechats were in the gorse along with Robins and two Wrens. Regrettably, no sign of a Dartford today.

The sea was a silvery grey, almost flat calm and at low water. It was a real pleasure to be there on such a glorious day.

Sounds like a good walk, Wendy. Good idea to meet in the middle, then I guess OH turned round & you went back to the car together, except you walked the furthest.|:D| Super pics, but I like the sea one best too. I haven't been near the sea for ages & we only live a few miles from it.:-C

It looks a super place, Wendy! I would want to do that walk regularly! Some good birds you found along the way too, especially the Stonechats! Perhaps you will get the Dartford on your next visit, I hope you do!

Lovely photo's of a very scenic area!

As you know, Upton Warren is just a stone's throw away from where I live.
I went down this morning for a few hours with the understanding that I'd return in good time to wake my wife for church. We saw our first swallow over the Moors pool this morning - it'll not shock you to hear that I have no pictures of that!. I've posted a few sunrise-type pictures in that thread but I just wanted to share this handsome chap with you all as it's not often one turns up at UW.
