Anyways, I saw 40 lifers, the last 6 were on the island of Cozumel on March 4, where I got 6 lifers: Cozumel Emerald, Bananaquit, Grassquit, Cozumel Wren (heard only), Cozumel Vireo (heard only), and Rufous-browed Peppershrike.
First new species I've seen for some time turned up on my local patch at the weekend and I got to see it yesterday afternoon after a lot of searching to no avail in the morning - a Glossy Ibis! Really pleased to have seen one, particularly on my home ground! If you're going to twitch then doing it within a 10 minute walk of home is definitely the way to go.
Those early times are great, I remember going out and it completely blowing my mind to see all these new species. Doesn't matter if it's common or not (though I've only seen Tree Sparrows once, and at a great distance so am rather green!), the main thing is just to enjoy the experience really. :t:
I visited the oasis of Rawdhat Kuriam, north east of Riyadh last weekend. Its part royal estate, park public park.
Added pale rock sparrow as a lifer and 7 birds to my Saudi list.
Pale rock sparrow is indescribably bland but the more interesting because it has so few identification features. Its like a house sparrow painted a grey-beige.
White-winged Duck, White-rumped and Red-headed Vulture, Sarus Crane, Giant Ibis, Collared Falconet, Banded Kingfisher and, one of my bogey birds, Great Slaty Woodpecker were among the best of 12 lifers (plus 3 new birds heard only) on an excellent days trip in Cambodia last week.
