I think timber for the skinner will be easy to get but sourcing the barrel base for a Robinson type no so easy. I am probably warming to Robinson so I was hoping someone could advise me where to get a base from to the approximate dimension of a commercial trap. It seems to me to be about two feet in diameter and about 18 inches high. I have already tried Focus and Homebase but they tend to sell tubs smaller in diameter and a lot taller in height.
A DIY Moth trap I had my first introduction to Moths last sunday at the Wyre Forest, Callow Hill near Bewdley. I attended a Moth training course, the first of 5 separate sundays throughout the summer. The course was run by Dave Grundy from Sparkbrook in Birmingham which I am sure all you guys will know very well. Dave introduced us to all the choices of Moth traps and field guides and showed us the differences in designs plus benefits and drawbacks of each.. After lunch he talked about Moth identification and Moth families and later we were given Moths that David had trapped the night before to identify. (not an easy task). I came away inspired and look forward to the second sunday of the course. I thought I would attempt to make a moth trap rather than buy one which seems fairly straight forward and being relatively good at DIY this helps. There are some good examples in this thread which can be used to help in the design. Not sure whether to go Robinson or Skinner. It depends to some extent on the materials available. The electrics I would buy from the links that have been posted to Paul Batty. I hope someone can help.
