Sorry all that I'm late to this conversation. Ovenbird, I have a pair of trip reports from Dec '06 and Jan '08. Obviously, very dated but there might be something of interest in there. PM me if you want copies. We went to many of the places you have mentioned. Calakmul was wonderful but a long haul on a single lane, slow road to the ruins. It took us an hour! The ruins themselves are magnificant and will take the whole day just to cover the grounds one time. Larry, we did camp up near the entrance for a night. In the morning, the Ocellated Turkeys came down from the trees, landing on the road, just in front of us. We visited the bat cave and felt the breeze created by thousands of bats swirling all around us. The road outside FCP is pretty much endless as far as birding goes. At least, that was our experience. Just pull over anywhere there is bird sound. Very few other travelers on the road. We had good birding there. Despite the seemingly excessive amount of people, we had good birding at Coba, with several ant swarms and attendant birds. No Rail at the pond but a Ringed Kingfisher that wasn't on their bird list at the time. We did a Rio Largarto boat trip and saw plenty of Flamingos but not much else. The dry forest birding was excellent. We were very lucky to see a Jabiru there and I tried my hand at digiscoping for the first time. I remember trying to get through the town that was south of Rio Lagartos and running into a parade where the center of town was closed. We were very lost for a while! The Ek Balam ruins were the nicest of them all. We snorkeled at Cozumel and kayaked at Sian Kaan as well. After two trips there, we've seen a very good selection of the birds and may never get back. We certainly won't forget our time there. Steve
