If you have tried them in the same magnification, it is very intriguing unless it is an effect of different FOV's, where possibly a narrow FOV has some psycho-motor impact on the eyeball movements. Do the 8x32 have the same, similar or greater FOV as the 8x42? If they do, I am tempted to concur with your original idea, that a full-size roof actually has more 3D-effect. Even though the IPD of a roof decides the separation between its optical axises, maybe the lateral/outer parts of the larger lenses provide some contribution to the 3D-effect. Possibly even the center/inner parts, and if so, probably to a lesser extent. One more thing to consider is the magnification. A greater magnification resembles viewing at a closer distance, in accordance to my previous post. Thus the eyeball convergence will increase with a greater magnification bin at close or mid-distance, compared to a lesser magnification binocular. But the other contributions to the 3D-effect from a lesser-magnification binocular I mentioned should over-rule this effect. Sure, I believe that a 6,5x/7x and a 9x/10x are a minimum set. I am trying to find my 10x, as you may know. And considering all the facts and ideas, it must be a 10x50. With clockwise focusing, it means one of the Big Three, or Meopta. Just cannot afford my own taste.
