i just got a zenith em off of ebay and was wondering wether it was any good at taking pictures of birds

Only if you get a telephoto lens to fit it, and make sure to practice your manual focus skills!
Easy for me to say, I shot with a Canon FTb and AE-1P, reading the meter and focusing became second nature. I can actually focus faster than my D70 can with my Sigma 70-300mm when I used the AE-1P's split prism viewfinder and (Mainly faster because I don't 'hunt' when I have insufficient subject contrast).
