Eastern Africa: Sudan, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi, Tanzania, Zambia, Mozambique, Malawi
Southern Africa: Namibia, Botswana, Zimbabwe, South Africa, KwaZulu-Natal
African Islands: Gulf of Guinea Islands, Bioko (Fernando Po)

Subspecies
14 subspecies recognized[1]:
- Z. s. stenocricotus: South-eastern Nigeria to Cameroon and northern Gabon; Bioko (Gulf of Guinea) - split as Forest White-eye by Gill and Donsker
- Z. s. senegalensis: Senegal to Uganda, northern Congo, northern Eritrea and north-western Ethiopia
- Z. s. demeryi: Sierra Leone to Liberia and Ivory Coast
- Z. s. stuhlmanni: North-western Tanzania to western Kenya and Uganda
- Z. s. gerhardi: Extreme southern South Sudan and northeastern Uganda
- Z. s. reichenowi: Eastern Zaire (mountains north-west of Lake Tanganyika and south-west of Lake Kivu)
- Z. s. toroensis: Lowlands of north-eastern Zaire to western Uganda
- Z. s. jacksoni: Highlands of Kenya and northern Tanzania (Loliondo)
- Z. s. stierlingi: Mountains of southern Tanzania to eastern Zambia, Malawi and western Mozambique
- Z. s. kasaicus: Central Zaire (Kasai) to north-eastern Angola
- Z. s. heinrichi: North-western Angola (Cuanza Norte and Cuanza Sul)
- Z. s. quanzae: Central Angola (Malanje to central highlands)
- Z. s. anderssoni: Southern Angola to Zambia, southern Tanzania, Malawi, Mozambique and Natal
- Z. s. tongensis: South-eastern Zimbabwe to north-eastern Natal and southern Mozambique
Habitat
Forests, moist savanna, and dry shrubland.
