44–48 cm (17¼-19 in)
Adult Breeding

  • Black hood
  • White rear eye crescents

Adult Non-breeding

  • Hood recedes to leave a blackish ear spot

South America: found in the Andean lakes of Ecuador to northern Argentina and central Chile


This is a monotypic species[1].

Some authorities still consider it a part of genus Larus.


Coasts, rivers, freshwater mountain lakes to at least 4600m, saline marshes, and pastures and plowed fields.


They can be found in big groups on most of the lakes in the high Andes.

Their varied diet consists of insects, worms, small fish, amphibians and sometimes eggs.


They generally breed in July and August. They nest communally.
