Identification
- Long, pale-tipped tail
- Slim bill
- Grayish brown above
- Pale below
- Striking red-brown rump
- White throat
- Black chest band speckled on lower edge.
Distribution
Northern coast of Australia and southern New Guinea.
Taxonomy
Previously considered the same species as the Rufous Fantail and Supertramp Fantail
Subspecies
There are two subspecies[1]:
- R. d. streptophora:
- Southern New Guinea
- R. d. dryas:
- Coastal northern Australia (Kimberley to western Cape York Peninsula)
Habitat
Rain forest and mangroves.
Behaviour
Frequently cocks and fans tail. Actively forages near the ground in wetter areas with dense vegetation.
Vocalizations
Song is a short, descending series of high-pitched squeaks. Call includes a metallic “pink.”
