Identification

18 cm.

  • Ash-grey head and upperparts
  • Pale lores
  • Blackish bar through eye and another on rear of ear coverts
  • Darker grey wings
  • Two noticeable white wing-bars
  • Outer tail feathers tipped white
  • White underparts
  • Blackish malar
  • Heavy black spots and streaks on upper breast
  • Large black spots on belly and flanks
  • White undertail-coverts
  • Very pale legs

South-east Asia: found in the northern Philippines (Luzon and Mindoro)

Taxonomy

Monotypic[1].
Formerly placed in genus Zoothera.

Habitat

Mid-mountain and moist montane forests from 300 to 1500m

Behaviour

Uncommon, shy and hard to see, on or near the ground, usually only seen at first light
