Alternative name: Cabanis's Tanager

Tangara cabanisi

Identification

15 cm

  • Purplish-azure crown
  • Black lores and iris
  • Mottled green mantle
  • Pale sky-blue rump and uppertail
  • Black central tail feathers with blue edging
  • Paler underparts with black scaling on upper breast
  • Black scapulars and greater and median wing-coverts.

Distribution

Central America: found in southern Mexico and adjacent Guatemala

Taxonomy

This is a monotypic species[1].

Habitat

Between 860-1900 m asl in humid broadleaf evergreen forest and plantations near to forest edge.

Behaviour

Diet

The Azure-rumped Tanager is omnivorous, it feeds on fruit and invertebrates.

Breeding

Two eggs are laid in a cup-shaped nest which is hidden in dense foliage. Incubation takes around 14 days.
