Identification

Bat Hawk Machaerhamphus alcinus RANGE Africa and southern Asia. In Africa breeds from Senegal and Gambia east to southern Uganda and southern Kenya and south to northern Namibia in the west and Natal in the east. Also occurs in west and central Ethiopia and has been recorded in Somalia. In southern Asia occurs from sothern Thailand and Burma south to Malaya, in Sumatra, Borneo, Sulawesi and in south-eastern New Guinea. Resident. Generally uncommon over most of range.

HABITAT Tropical forest and woodlands with adjacent open areas, sometimes occurs close to towns.

SUBSPECIES Three subspecies are recognised: nominate race in Malaysia, Sumatra and Borneo, papuanus in New Guinea and anderssoni in Africa.
