Identification

dense forests throughout 29-36cm. Short broad wings and a long tail, dark blue-grey upperparts, white, barred reddish below, dark vertical throat stripe. The larger female is browner above than the male. The juvenile is dark brown above and white, barred with brown below, barred tail.

Distribution

South Asia from Pakistan and India to south China and Indonesia.

Taxonomy

There are 11 subspecies.

Habitat

Dense forests; in winter open woodland including savanna and cultivation.

Behaviour

It nests in trees, building a new nest each year; 2-5 eggs are laid.

The diet includes lizards, dragonflies, small birds and mammals.
