Leucopternis melanops

Identification

37-42cm
Blackish slate cap and hind neck, white spots on wing coverts and scapulars, orbital eye ring white underparts, brown eyes, dark tail with single white bar (juveniles have two bars), yellow feet.

Sexes similar.

Distribution

Brazil, the Guianas, Colombia, Ecuador, French Guiana, Guyana, Peru, Suriname, and Venezuela.

Taxonomy

Monotypic.

Habitat

Moist lowland forests, swampy forest and along wooded river banks.

Behaviour

The diet includes birds, snakes, invertebrates and large athropods and beetles.
