Identification

10–11 cm (4-4¼ in)

  • Black head to breast
  • Brown nape, neck and upper wing-coverts
  • White rump
  • White underparts with fine brown barring

Distribution

Southeast Asia: found in Indonesia, Greater Sundas, Sumatra, Java, Sulawesi, Lesser Sundas, Bali, Timor, Moluccas

Taxonomy

This is a monotypic species[1].

Habitat

Forest, grass and bushland, savanna, rice paddies and gardens.

Behaviour

Diet

The diet consist of grass and herb seeds also insects. They feed both on the ground and clinging to grass stems.

Breeding

They build a large domed grass nest. The clutch consists of 4-10 white eggs.
