The Black-headed Munia was in 1996 split into two species. The english name for the two parts have been in flux ever since with both forms at some stage being referred to as Black-headed Munia. The current best alternative is to use
- Chestnut Munia Lonchura atricapilla
- Tricolored Munia Lonchura malacca
An earlier split from this group is White-capped Munia Lonchura ferruginosa
