Identification
28 - 30cm. A rather large, black, grey and white laughingthrush:
- Glossy blackish head, ear-coverts and breast
- Pale blue postorbital patch
- White area behind ear-coverts shading into pale grey border around clear-cut black of hood
- Olive-brown upperparts, tail darker (more greyish in sweeti)
- Olive-brown vent, flanks and tighs
- Black bill
Sexes similar, juveniles not described.
Distribution
Found in southeast Laos and central and south Vietnam.
Locally common restricted-range species.

Two subspecies accepted:
Habitat
Moist lowland forests and montanes, found at 800 - 1650m.
Behaviour
No information about diet.
Usually seen in groups of 3 to 10 birds, often with other laughingthrushes in bird waves. Mostly foraging on the ground in dense undergrowth but also ascends to middle storey and lower canopy.
Breeding season May to June. No other information.
Resident species.
