Identification

• Large red bare area around the eye
• Black head, neck and under parts
• Brown abdomen
• Olive-brown back and coverts
• Rufous-chestnut primaries and tail
• Black spots on the back, coverts and secondaries.

Distribution

South America: found in Colombia, Venezuela, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia and Brazil.

Taxonomy

Subspecies^[1]

There are 4 subspecies:

• P. n. nigromaculata:

• South-eastern Colombia to eastern Peru, northern Bolivia and south-western Amazonian Brazil

• P. n. bowmani:

• South-central Amazonian Brazil and north-eastern Bolivia (northern Santa Cruz)

• P. n. confinis:

• Northern Amazonian Brazil (River Xingú to River Tocantins and River Araguaia)

• P. n. paraensis:

• Eastern Brazil south of River Amazon (River Tocantins to western Maranhão)

Habitat

Moist lowland forests and swamps.

Behaviour

Groups may be found near ant swarms.

Diet

The diet includes ants and insects.

Vocalisation

Song: heeee... heergh... huugh.
