Identification
Small (10.5-11 cm). Grey wth red rump and upper tail-coverts and black line through eye. Similar to Cinderella Waxbill, but darker grey without red on lower flanks, and tail longer.
Distribution
Africa south of the equator.

Black-tailed Waxbill has in the past been placed in genus Estrilda Subspecies:1
- G. p. perreini
- G. p. incana
- Southern Malawi, eastern Zimbabwe, Mozambique and eastern South Africa
Habitat
Open woodland and forest edges.
Behaviour
Found singly or in pairs.
Diet
Forages on ground close to or under dense cover for grass seeds, nectar and insects.
