Description
polytypic lowland to middle elevation raptor, forest (primary and second growth). The bird in photo is of the wider ranging subspecies syama.
Identification
Black Baza Aviceda leuphotes RANGE Southern Asia. Breeds in the foothills of the Himalayas and east across southern China to Hainan.
A summer visitor to breeding range moving south to winter in southern India and South-East Asia south to Sumatra and less commonly to western Java.
HABITAT Forest and plantations, often along rivers and sometimes near villages.
SUBSPECIES Five subspecies recognised: nominate race breeds in the Himalayas, burmana in Burma and Indochina, syama in southern China, wolfei in Sichuan and andamanica in the Andaman Islands.
