Coracina melas has six subspecies:[1]

  • Waigeo Island (New Guinea)
  • E. m. tommasonis
  • Yapen Island (New Guinea)
  • E. m. melan
  • Salawati Island and western New Guinea
  • E. m. meeki
  • Eastern New Guinea
  • E. m. goodsoni
  • Aru Islands (New Guinea)
  • E. m. batantae
  • Batanta Island (New Guinea)

Formerly placed in the genus Coracina.
Dickinson gives the scientific name as Edolisoma melas
