Description

Favours muddy shores and short grass near water. Its name derives from its call which sounds like metal being struck with a hammer. Other names: Blacksmith Plover, Schmiedekiebitz, Waffenkiebitz, Smedvipa, Smidsplevier, Pavoncella armata, Bontkiewiet

Identification

A pied plover with grey wings and mantle. Size up to 30cm.

Habitat

Pairs and scattered individuals frequent the shores of a wide variety inland waters and in marshy ground, flooded fields and other moist places.
