Tropical Africa: From Sudan and Ethiopia in the north to Zambia and Malawi in the south.

This is a polytypic species^[1] consisting of 5 subspecies.
Formerly placed in the genus Parisoma.

Sylvia lugens has five subspecies:

• S. l. lugens:

• Ethiopia

• S. l. griseiventris:

• Southern Ethiopia (Bale Mountains)

• S. l. jacksoni:

• Sudan and Uganda to Kenya, northern Tanzania, eastern Zaire and Malawi

• S. l. prigoginei:

• Eastern Zaire (Itombwe Mountains)

• S. l. clara:

• Tanzania (Matengo Highlands)
