Identification

Brown Tinamou (Crypturellus obsoletus)

Identification: Brown above, rufous below, darkest on belly, flanks and undertail coverts barred blackish-brown. Bill black, legs olive.

Length 28cm.

Range: Eastern Colombia and Venezuela south to Southern Brazil, Bolivia, Paraguay and northern Argentina. Resident.

Habitat: Cloud forest and dense scrub on mountain ridges at 1,200-2,200m.

Voice: A dull whistle.

Subspecies: C. o. cerviniventris is found in Venezuela, castaneus in eastern parts of Colombia and Ecuador and northern Peru, ochraceiventris in central Peru, punensis in southern Peru and western Bolivia, griseiventris in Santarem, Brazil, obsoletus in southern Brazil, Paraguay and north-east Argentina, traylori in eastern Peru and hypochracea in south-west Brazil.
