Identification

20 cm (7¾ in)

  • White-flecked crown to nape
  • Black face, throat and hind neck
  • White upper breast
  • Yellow belly

Amount of black on throat differs among subspecies1.

Distribution

South America: found in Venezuela, Colombia, Ecuador, and Peru.

Taxonomy

Subspecies

Three subspecies are accepted[2]:

  • D. t. carrikeri:
  • Santa Marta Mountains (north-eastern Colombia)
  • D. t. taeniata:
  • D. t. stictocephala:
  • Andes of south-eastern Peru (Junín to Cuzco)

Habitat

Montane forests and dense understorey of broken forests.

Behaviour

Diet

Their diet consists of small fruits and berries, including mistletoe; and insects.
