Western Africa: DRC and Angola
Eastern Africa: Ethiopia, Kenya, Tanzania, Zambia, Mozambique and Malawi
Southern Africa: Namibia, Botswana, Zimbabwe, South Africa, KwaZulu-Natal, Lesotho and Swaziland

Taxonomy

Subspecies^[1]

There are 8 subspecies:

• A. v. saphiroi:

• South-eastern Ethiopia and north-western Somalia

• A. v. goodsoni:

• Central and south-western Kenya to extreme northern Tanzania

• A. v. neumanni:

• Plateau of Angola; disperses to Namibia and Botswana

• A. v. chobiensis:

• North-eastern Namibia to southern Zaire, western Tanzania, northern Botswana and Mozambique

• A. v. marungensis:

• Northern Zambia to southern Tanzania

• A. v. namibicus:

• North-eastern and central Namibia

• A. v. exasperatus:

• Salt pans of north-eastern Botswana; wanders to western Zimbabwe

• A. v. vaalensis:

• Southern Botswana to southern Mozambique, South Africa and western Lesotho

Of these, subspecies marungensis, along with daviesi are considered invalid^[2].

Habitat

Dry lowland grassland.
