Gyps coprotheres

Identification

Cape Griffon Vulture (Cape Vulture) Gyps coprotheres

Range: Southern Africa: occurs in Namibia, Botswana, southern Mozambique and in Transvaal and Lesotho in South Africa. Rarely occurs north to Zimbabwe and Zambia. Adults are resident but young birds disperse, most commonly in a south-westerly direction. Range and numbers have declined in recent decades due to lack of carrion and direct persecution.

Habitat: Searches for carrion over savanna, roosting and nesting colonially on ledges on cliff-faces in mountains.

Photographed: Kruger National Park, South Africa.
