Doliornis remseni

Identification

21.5 cm

  • Greyish-black upperparts, tail and wings
  • Black crown in male, dark grey in female
  • Maroon-chestnut crest is mostly concealed but found in both sexes
  • Chestnut underparts up to lower breast, rest of breast and throat dark grey
  • Iris is dark red, bill and legs grey

Similar Species

Bay-vented Cotinga and Red-crested Cotinga

Distribution

South America: found in the central Andes of Colombia, eastern Andes of Ecuador, and extreme northern Peru. This is a rare and local bird.[1],[2],[3].

Taxonomy

This is a monotypic species[1].

Habitat

Scrub-woodland at the treeline.

Behaviour

Usually feeds on fruit.

Vocalizations

A single quite nasal sound given with quite long intervals.
