Identification
Male 37-38cm, female 41-42cm. Black upperparts, ash grey, dark barred chest and abdomen, longitudinal dark stripes on throat, white undertail, brown, dark banded uppertail, yellow iris, green yellow legs. Sexes similar. Juvenile - browner upperparts, cream fringes to feathers, pale chest and abdomen with longitudinal stripes.
Distribution
Chile, western Argentina and Tierra del Fuego.
Taxonomy
The Chilean Hawk was recently split from Bicolored Hawk.
Monotypic.
Habitat
Temperate forest to 2700m, hunting in shrubland, grassland or agricultural land.
Behaviour
The diet includes mainly small birds, though large insects and rodents are also taken.
Its nest is an oval platform built from twigs and sticks, placed in a tall tree. 2 dull light bluish to off-white eggs are laid and incubated for 3 weeks.
