Identification

21.5cm

  • Olive brown upperparts
  • Pale grey underparts
  • Rufous brown head and crest, streaked white
  • Brown wings
  • Bright rufous flanks and sides
  • Grey brown crissum
  • Dusky long tail
  • Short bill

Distribution

South America: found in Bolivia, Paraguay and Argentina.

Taxonomy

Subspecies

Two subspecies are recognized1:

  • R. l. saturata:
  • R. l. lanceolata:
  • Northern and central Argentina (south to Río Negro and southern Buenos Aires)

Habitat

Dry shrubland, dense thorny undergrowth and forests.

Behaviour

Breeding

They build a globe shaped, closed nest, with a side entrance from grass. The 2 eggs are incubated for 16-17 days; the young fledge 14-15 days later.
