Asia: found from the mountains of Nepal to south-eastern Tibet, south-western China and north-eastern Myanmar.


This is a monotypic species[1].
Formerly placed in genus Pinicola.


Temperate montane juniper and rhododendron shrubland.



Their diet consists mostly of a variety of seeds, flowers and berries.
