Identification

A medium sized bird
Large black, stubby beak Adult male

  • Black plumage
  • Dull red collar at the nape, shouldersy
  • Red belly is mottled with black

Adult female

  • Black head and breast
  • Greenish upperparts
  • Yellowish underparts

Young birds: similar to females but have less black. It is medium-size.

Similar Species

Crimson-collared Tanager

Distribution

Endemic to eastern Mexico (Nuevo Le¢n to northern Veracruz and north-eastern Puebla).

A rare visitor to southern Texas.

Taxonomy

This is a monotypic species[1], which is the only member of its genus.

Habitat

Thorn scrub thickets, forest clearing, parks and back yards.

Behaviour

May be seen at low or high levels, or even on the ground, in mixed species flocks.

Diet

Their diet consists mostly of seeds and leaves.
