Identification
Bluish-balck upperside including throat, white underside, head mostly black with reddish front and malar stripe (subspecies xinguensis) or reddish front, malar and upper throat (nominate subspecies).
Distribution
South America found only in central Brazil.
Taxonomy
Subspecies
Two subspecies are recognized[1]:
- P. b. baeri:
- Central Brazil (western Goi south and adjacent north-eastern Mato Grosso)
- P. b. xinguensis:
- Central Brazil (upper Rio Xingu in northern Mato Grosso)
Habitat
Moist lowland shrubland and riverine forests.
Behaviour
Often search for food low even on muddy ground or floating vegetation.
