Identification

40-45cm

  • Rufous plumage

Male

  • Long central tail feathers
  • Green speculum with white border

Female:

  • Brown speculum with white border

Distribution

Kerguelen and Crozet island groups in the southern Indian Ocean.

Taxonomy

  • Kerguelen Islands

  • Crozet Island

Habitat

Pools, freshwater lakes, marshes, peatbogs and streams; in winter, coastal lagoons.

Behaviour

Diet

The diet includes vegetation, crustaceans and insects.

Breeding

The clutch consists of 5 eggs.
