Identification
12cm. A small tanager with a thin bill.
- Rufous-chestnut head, intensa with a darker chestnut head
- Grey upperparts and tail
- Light grey breast becoming whitish on centre of belly
Female is similar to male but has a paler throat and is more rufous-buff. Juveniles are undescribed.
Distribution
South America: found in Colombia and Venezuela.
An uncommon to locally fairly common restricted-range species.
Taxonomy
Subspecies
Four subspecies recognized[1]:
- T. f. fulviceps on the eastern slope of the Andes in north-east Colombia and in the mountains of northern Venezuela
- T. f. intensa in the eastern Andes of northeast Colombia
- T. f. obscuriceps in the Sierra de Perijá (Colombia/Venezuela border)
- T. f. meridensis in the Andes of western Venezuela
Habitat
Moist to semi-humid forest. Often in canopy vines and shrubby vine-tangled borders of forest, also in shrubby gardens (e.g. Caracas).
At 750 - 2000m in Venezuela, 1500 - 2300m in Colombia.
Behaviour
Usually seen singly, in pairs or small groups. Often in mixed-species flocks.
Very active and alert.
Diet
Feeds on insects. Also occasionally takes small berries.
Breeding
One bird in breeding condition recorded in April. No other information about breeding.
Movements
A resident species.
