Identification

8–9 cm
Male

  • Golden-green head and back
  • Bill
  • Black upper mandible
  • Black tipped pinkish lower mandible

Distribution

South America: found in Colombia, Venezuela, Guyana, Suriname, Brazil

Taxonomy

There are 6 subspecies[1]:
Green-bellied Hummingbird - viridigaster Group

  • A. v. viridigaster:
  • Eastern slope of Eastern Andes of Colombia
  • A. v. pacaraimae:
  • Mountains of southern Venezuela (Sierra de Pacaraima)
  • A. v. iodura:

Green-bellied Hummingbird (Copper-tailed) - cupreicauda Group

  • A. v. cupreicauda:
  • A. v. duidae:
  • A. v. laireti:
  • Tepuis of southern Venezuela (Cerro de la Neblina)

The second group is sometimes considered a full species.

Habitat

Tropical and submontane forest edges.

Behaviour

Diet

Their diet consists of nectar and insects.
