Aegithina viridissima

Identification

11.5-12.8cm.

• Mostly dark olive-green plumage
• Clear yellow on central belly to undertail-coverts
• Black wings with two white wing-bars
• Bright yellow eye-ring around dark eye
• Black tail and uppertail-coverts

Females are duller with uniform medium olive-green upperparts and a green tail. Juveniles are similar to females.

Distribution

Found from extreme southern Burma south to peninsular Thailand, Malaya, Sumatra and Borneo.
Common in suitable habitat but habitat loss greatly accelerated during last decades.

Taxonomy

Subspecies

Two subspecies recognized:

• A. v. viridissima in most of its range
• A. v. thapsina on Anambas Islands (Indonesia)

Habitat

Lowland evergreen forest, locally also in tall secondary forest.
Occurs in the lowlands up to 800m.

Behaviour

Diet

Feeds on invertebrates.
Forages in pairs or small groups in the canopy, often in mixed-species flocks.

Breeding

Breeding poorly known. Lays probably 2 eggs.

Movements

A resident species.
