Identification

With 14.5 - 16cm a small and rather inconspicuous Babbler:

  • Dark grey head
  • Small, blackish-grey bill
  • White supercilium and throat
  • White underparts with pale grey breastband and rufous flanks
  • Relatively short tail

Flycatcher-like appearance.
Juveniles display yellowish lower mandible.

Distribution

Found in Southeast Asia. Very locally on Peninsular Malaysia, more common on Borneo and Sumatra.

Subspecies

Two subspecies recognized[1]:

The species is also placed in the monotypic genus Ophrydornis and called Ophrydornis albogularis. However, this name is not accepted by most authorities.

Habitat

Found in understorey of broadleaf evergreen forest. Also in swampy areas of forest and in lightly logged forest.

Behaviour

Diet

Feeds on insects, mainly ants and hoppers.
Usually seen singly or in pairs, not in bird waves. Forages close to the ground.

Breeding

Breeding season from July to August in Sumatra, from May to June in Borneo. No other information.
