Identification

4.5 inches, Large, conical bill, a large, flat head, short tail, olive face, buff streaked breast and sides, white belly and undertail coverts, a narrow, whitish crown stripe, rusty wing coverts, and dark and light streaking on back. The sexes are similar. Juvenile plumage similar to adult but has fine streaks confined to sides of breast.

Distribution

Central and eastern United States. Localized in east.

Taxonomy

Polytypic. Consists of two subspecies.

Habitat

Found in neglected open fields with tall herbaceous vegetation but without much woody growth.
