Hooded Vulture Necrosyrtes monachus

Distribution

Africa: widespread and common in sub-Saharan Africa from Mauritania and Senegal east to Ethiopia and western Somalia and south to the Cape but absent from the closed forest zone of Central Africa. Mainly resident but some birds undergo extensive wandering and occasionally recorded within the Western Palearctic in southern Morocco. Two races are recognised: the nominate across northern tropical Africa and pileatus from eastern Sudan southwards

Taxonomy

Habitat

Open savanna and semi-desert, also woodlands and in many areas found in close proximity to towns and villages.

Behaviour

Nests singly in trees, rarely on rocks or buildings.
