Description
estimated population 50-250 and declining. principal threat is unnatural hydroelectric water level regulation and toxic sediments from nearby mining ventures. This is a flightless grebe.
Identification
Puna Grebe (Junin Grebe) Podiceps taczanowskii Range Found only on Lake Junin, Peru. Population now much reduced.
Habitat Mountain lake at 4,000m.
Identification A little-known South American grebe with a very restricted range. Adult breeding: brownish-grey above shading to pale grey on rump, flanks mottled grey-brown, face and throat, foreneck and underparts white. Head grey-brown with short crest at rear and black nape patch, hindneck blackish. Iris red, bill black, legs yellowish. Adult non-breeding: as adult breeding but crest reduced and lacks black nape.
