Identification

Brown grey, with grey rump, mottled grey-brown flanks, face and throat; the foreneck and underparts are white. There is a short crest to the rear of the grey-brown head. The nape has a black patch, the hindneck is black, as is the bill. The iris is red, the legs yellow. 35cm. Flightless.

This bird is endangered.

Distribution

Found only on Lake Junin, Peru. Population now much reduced.
