- Podiceps taczanowskii
Identification
A flightless grebe of 35 cm length. Brown grey, with grey rump, mottled grey-brown flanks, face and throat; the foreneck and underparts are white. There is a short crest to the rear of the grey-brown head. The nape has a black patch, the hindneck is black, as is the bill. The iris is red, the legs yellow.
Distribution
Found only on Lake Junin, Peru. Population now much reduced and the bird is Critically Endangered.
Taxonomy
This is a monotypic species.
Habitat
Shallow mountain lake at 4,000m with extensive reedbeds.
Behaviour
Feeds in open water and builds nest among the reeds
