Identification

60cm.

  • Black plumage, feather shafts glossy black
  • Long tail glossed green
  • Red eye
  • Black bill

Females are larger. Juveniles are barred dark brown and buff, have a reddish brown bill and a reddish brown eye.

Distribution

Endemic to Kai Islands in the Moluccas (Indonesia).
A little known, restricted-range species. Indonesia

Taxonomy

This is a monotypic species.
Forms a superspecies with Pheasant Coucal, Lesser Black Coucal and Biak Coucal.

Nestling recorded in July, nest not described. Lays white eggs.
