Taxonomy

Monotypic.
Has been considered conspecific with Magellanic Tapaculo in the past. SACC has recently accepted a proposal to treat this taxon as a subspecies of Merida Tapaculo; Opus awaits the position of the major checklists before following.

Habitat

High elevation is characteristic.
