Central and South America
Central America: occurs only in Costa Rica and Panama
South America: found in Colombia, Venezuela, Ecuador and Peru

There are 7 subspecies[1]:

  • Eastern Andes of Colombia and Andes of western Venezuela
  • S. s. mentalis:
  • Subtropical eastern Ecuador
  • S. s. colligata:
  • Subtropical north-western Peru (Cajamarca)
  • S. s. ruficrissa:
  • Subtropical central Peru (Junín)

An additional subspecies olivacea is not recognised by all authorities[2].

Habitat

Moist montane forest and forest edges.
