Pseudobulweria aterrima

Identification

Mascarene Petrel (Reunion Petrel) Pterodroma aterrima (treated as a race of Tahiti Petrel P. rostrata by some authors) Medium-sized gadfly-petrel with large bill, long wings and fairly long tail but appearance in life is not certain. Largely blackish-brown, possibly with grey-black underwing. Bill black and legs pink. Length 36cm.

Distribution

A very little-known species of the Indian Ocean which may breed on the Mascarene Islands. It has been recorded on Reunion and there are possible sight records in the vicinity. Known from four specimens collected there in the 19th Century but then lost until three birds were found dead there in the 1970s.
