Scytalopus meridanus has two subspecies:

• S. m. meridanus

• Andes of w Venezuela (Mérida and Táchira)

• S. m. fuscicauda

• Andes of Venezuela (southern Lara and Trujillo)
• Previously considered a separate species (Lara Tapaculo)
